I am currently a Dental Core Training 2 in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry at Bristol Royal Infirmary/Bristol Dental Hospital. My post consists of two six-month rotations, and I am coming to the end of my first 6 months in OMFS. I graduated from Kings College London in 2017, and then completed my dental foundation training in Buckinghamshire. Although I enjoyed my time in practice, I wanted to develop my surgical skills and gain experience in fields which I had limited exposure to as an undergraduate such as orthodontics. Following this, I did DCT1 in oral surgery, orthodontics and paediatric dentistry at Kingston Hospital & St George's Hospital. I currently work as a OMFS DCT at Bristol Royal Infirmary and no two weeks are the same! My rota is highly variable and below is an example of an OMFS DCT at Bristol.
Monday: This morning I am assisting the associate specialist with their sedation list. This is an opportunity to gain experience in administering intravenous sedation and perform minor oral surgery under supervision. The afternoon session is spent on oral surgery clinic assessing new and follow up patients referred in for a second opinion/minor oral surgery.
Tuesday and Wednesday: I assisted in theatres which means a 7:30am start in order to assist the registrar/consultant with clerking and consenting the patient. Tuesday's list included orthognathic and trauma cases. Wednesday was oncology cases.
Thursday: I spent Thursday morning on urgent dental care assessing and treating patients requiring 'emergency' care e.g. dental trauma or facial swelling. I then travelled to South Bristol Community Hospital to assist in theatres for dento-alveolar cases.
Friday: I attend the OMFS/Oral Surgery weekly team meeting. Following this, I assist on the OMFS consultant clinic in the morning and spend the afternoon in the oral surgery department performing minor oral surgery under supervision.
Saturday: Off
Sunday Night: I am on-call Sunday and Monday night. On-call can be extremely busy or eerily quiet. The latter is always appreciated. During on-call, you complete ward jobs, firefight in Emergency Department and assist in emergency theatres. OMFS on-call definitely improves your organisational skills. My registrar once informed me that 'the first week is always the worst' after I had a challenging week of day on-call.
There is no course or book that can truly prepare you for an OMFS post but you DO get into the swing of things and gain confidence with time and experience. It was a steep learning curve, but I was supported by my registrars and consultants throughout. I would definitely recommend during an OMFS post as you'll gain a range of transferable skills which will be of value if you opt to return to practice or pursue speciality training. I currently do not know what path I'll take in the futue, but I'm enjoying the journey and I'm excited to start the restorative rotation!
